The Two Friends and the Bear – A Panchatantra Story About True Friendship

In a dense forest near a small village, two friends, Sudama and Chatur, enjoyed walking together, sharing stories, and exploring nature. One sunny morning, they wandered deeper into the forest, excited to find fresh fruits and flowers.

“Look at these berries, Chatur! They’re so bright and ripe,” said Sudama with a smile.

“Yes! Let’s collect some for our lunch,” replied Chatur.

Suddenly, a loud growl echoed through the trees. Both friends froze. From behind a bush, a huge bear appeared, its eyes fixed on them.

“Run, Chatur! Quick, climb that tree!” shouted Sudama.

Sudama swiftly climbed a tall tree, gripping the branches tightly. Chatur, slower and heavier, could not climb in time. Thinking fast, he lay flat on the ground, holding his breath, pretending to be dead.

The bear sniffed Chatur carefully, pawed him, and finally wandered away, convinced he was lifeless.

After a few tense moments, Sudama climbed down and ran to his friend.

“Are you alright, Chatur?” he asked, worried.

Chatur shook his head. “Yes, I’m safe… but Sudama, a real friend never abandons you in danger.”

Sudama felt ashamed. “You’re right, Chatur. I should have stayed with you. From now on, we face everything together.”

From that day forward, Sudama and Chatur remembered this lesson. True friendship means standing by someone, through fear, danger, and challenges, not leaving them alone.

Moral: A friend who deserts you in trouble is not a true friend; loyalty and support define real friendship.
