The Tale of Washerman’s Donkey – Panchatantra Story for Kids

The Washerman’s Donkey Story

Once upon a time, in a small village, there lived a poor washerman named Chandrakanta. He worked hard every day, washing clothes for the villagers. He owned a donkey, which helped him carry heavy bundles of wet clothes to and from the river.

One day, the donkey was feeling very hungry. As they walked through the village, the donkey spotted a pile of fresh vegetables left near a house. He could not resist and started eating them greedily. The washerman shouted, “Oh no, stop! Those are not for you!” But the donkey paid no attention.

The donkey continued eating wherever he found something tasty. Soon, he reached the king’s palace gardens and saw ripe vegetables and fruits. He started munching on them too! The guards noticed him and shouted, “Hey! Stop, thief!” The donkey got scared and ran away as fast as his legs could carry him.

The donkey ran back to the washerman, who scolded him gently, “Why do you eat things that are not ours? You will get us into trouble one day!”

The donkey, however, had learned nothing and kept wandering around, looking for easy food. One day, he entered a field of chili plants and started eating. Instantly, the spicy taste made him sneeze and cough. The farmer saw him and yelled, “Get out of my field!” The donkey ran away, this time sneezing and kicking, while the washerman chased him, embarrassed.

From that day, the donkey learned a valuable lesson. He realized that greed and carelessness could cause trouble, and that he should listen to his master. He stopped eating other people’s crops and became a responsible helper to the washerman.

Moral:

Greed and carelessness can lead to trouble. Listening to wise advice keeps you safe and out of trouble.
